Dell wrong price

Dell quoted me the price of one laptop over their website.
That is expensive!
Information quality is every where...

Information that cant be found...

This slogan, kind of summarise a lot in the Information & Data Quality issues...
Very striking, as it says,

" Information that cant be found is the information that cant be used. "
Found at: http://www.productivity.ie/

Adding something to it is, that if the quality of information ( if found ) is not up to the mark, what good is it going to bring...its same as if some one tell you that, to get to city centre, you can take Luas from DCU..well its information and advice, which is completely wrong...

Happy St. Patricks Day

A very happy St. Patricks Day to all of you..

One of things Data Quality also addresses is the unusual combination of the words, especially in addresses. Say if you see an address with on O' Connell Street and its has the Dublin 24 written beside it, you know there is something wrong. Its called Data Cleansing and there are many techniques like that.

IQ Network- Helix

Useless information

On thursday afternoon, I was traveling back home to Lucan from DCU. Once I got on M50, I saw these big signs (apparently they dispaly uptodate information on traffic) saying,
"Accident ahead, expect delays"

That information was no good to anyone, as it should have mentioned that accident is at/before/ after, some particular junction, so if you can leave M50 before that, do so. Well I got home with no traffic jams and only found out later that accident was near some where Dundrum exit, which is miles away or I should say atleast eight exits away from DCU...

In your view, What is Data/ information Quality?

When asked about what is data/ information data quality is, you said:

  • Getting information correct & putting processes in place to do so.
  • To see how reliable data is.
  • Management of data in a different and accurate way.
  • Techniques to judge, how accurate data is.
  • Making sure the information you have is correct.
  • Making sure integrity and correctness is valid.
  • Reliable data.
  • Poor data can be misleading, so it should be addressed.

Personal experiences with poor data quality!

When asked about personal experiences with poor data quality, you told about:
  • Data quality issues when ordering stocks for the bar.
  • Videostore phone numbers weren't updated, which lead to huge fines.
  • Incorrect information on the passport.
  • Incorrect information stored on the o2 system.
  • False emails and overcharged by the AIB.
  • A bank credited account for €3000. ( No complaints there!)
  • Online shopping problems.
  • Wrong wages sent in the bank account.
  • Free broadband for a while now.

Interesting facts

We gave a small registration form to be filled on our launch night, which also included some general questions about the data quality. Thanks again everyone for filling it. Some very interesting stories of poor data quality were mentioned ( I have thrown those questions and answers above) . Overall most of us seems to have very good understanding of what data quality is and its importance in our lives.

Launch Night Success

Well we had our Launch Night and it was a big success. Over 25 people, students and teachers. Thanks everyone for making it happen and in particular, our guest speaker Mr. Daragh Obrien ( I hope I spelled his name right...), Cahil, Mr. Howard Duncan and ofcourse Dr. Markus Helfert.
